Adult Literacy Students Visit the Ottawa County Farmer’s Market

We are so excited that the Ottawa County Farmer’s Market is thriving! A few of our adult literacy students took part in a health literacy event in which we discussed the health benefits of eating tomatoes and also learned some fun facts about them. (Did you know that as of 2013, the world’s heaviest tomato, weighing in at 7 pounds, 12 oz, was grown in Oklahoma?) We also sampled some homemade salsa before our field trip to the Farmer’s Market.

The Farmer’s Market hosts several local vendors who provide homegrown fresh produce and homemade goods. Thanks to a generous donation of Veggie Bucks, several of our students were able to shop the Farmers Market, some for the first time.

Check out the size of that Watermelon (which, coincidentally, is Oklahoma’s state vegetable…)

The Miami Public Library Adult Literacy Program is funded in part by a grant from the Oklahoma Department of Libraries.
