Community Garden coming soon!

The Miami Public Library is concerned about the health of our community.  Part of the reason for our poor health is that out of 77 Oklahoma counties, Ottawa County ranks 39th in vegetable consumption and 45th in fruit consumption.  Poor health literacy, or not having the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions, also plays a large role.  Working with partners at Northeastern Tribal Health Systems, Ottawa County Health Department, and INTEGRIS, we applied for a Health Literacy Grant from the Oklahoma Department of Libraries.  This grant has enabled us to put in four raised garden beds to the south of the health department.  In addition, we will offer some classes which may include information on gardening for your health and on how to create tasty dishes with produce from the garden.  Be watching for more information about dates and times of classes.

This Health Literacy Project is funded through the Oklahoma Department of Libraries with funds from Library Services and Technology Act, a Federal source of library funding provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
