Miami Public Library Adult Literacy Program

Ben Loring hands a check to Kristen Bartz for the literacy program.

Representative Ben Loring stopped by the Library last week to present the Adult Literacy Program with a $7,000 grant awarded to the program by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries.

Did you know that 14% of adults are functionally illiterate? This means that they may struggle with every day tasks that require reading skills beyond a basic level. They may struggle to find success in daily life and in the work place. Low literacy can be connected to health issues, crime rates, poverty, and unemployment.

The Miami Public Library Adult Literacy Program seeks to help adult learners achieve their educational goals, big or small. The goal of the program is to provide learners with one-to-one tutoring and free access to educational materials.

Do you wish to be a part of something that is as rewarding as it is helpful? Are you passionate about serving your community? Do you have two hours a week to spare? If you answered yes to these questions, you would be a perfect fit for our program. The program has recently grown and we are seeking volunteer tutors to match with our new students. Training will be provided by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. For information about how to volunteer, contact Kristen at 918-541-2292.
