STEAM!

STEAM! What’s all the hot air about?  The integration of disciplines Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math produce innovative answers to current questions.  An engineer who thinks like an artist when solving a problem or conflict has a less restrictive approach to designing a solution.  Leonardo Da Vinci, for example would have had a very difficult time separating the five disciplines. They were all tightly woven into his creative process.  As children develop, their creative skill, innovation, high-level thinking, and ability to collaborate are as important as academic subjects.

Libraries are the perfect space for people to collaborate and MAKE things happen.  Whether researching to expanded knowledge, learning about new technology, building with LEGOs, or making art, libraries are breaking down barriers and creatively evolving to meet the needs of the community.  The Miami Public Library offers opportunities for STEAM activities through Lego League and Art in April.

Lego League takes place on Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m.  Elementary children are invited to use our Lego collection to create whatever they can imagine.

In April we host four art workshops for elementary students.  Children learn about some famous artists and then are invited to create works using those artists’ techniques.  Watch for Art in April in our spring brochure!
