Early Literacy Basics
Children who have been read to from an early age have a larger vocabulary, better language skills, and are more interested in books. And recent research indicates it is never too early to start preparing little ones for reading success. The term “early literacy” refers to everything babies and children know about reading BEFORE they actually learn to read. The process of brain development for reading starts before birth through quiet talking and singing. It continues after birth through touch, love, eye contact, one-on-one interaction and repetition. The parent is the key component in story time and the development of pre-reading skills. So keep books everywhere – in the car, the diaper bag, by the bed and a special “reading place” for story time. Be watching for new programs offered by Miami Public Library that will help you nurture those pre-reading skills in your little one and make story time a bonding experience for the whole family.
