Book Discussion “The Cowboy” coming to Miami Public Library

Miami, OK—Miami Public Library announced today that it will host “The Cowboy” book discussion series. The event is made possible by a grant from Oklahoma Humanities with generous funding and support from Kirkpatrick Family Fund, McCasland Foundation, and Oklahoma City University.

“The Cowboy” series contains readings on the historical cowboy and includes reminiscences from “real” cowboys and fictional depictions—from Owen Wister’s romantic idealization to Larry McMurtry’s sometimes humorous realism.

Schedule of Discussions:

  • Cowboy Life: Reconstructing an American Myth edited, with an introduction and afterword, by William W. Savage, Jr., Wednesday, July 12, 2023, 6:30 PM with guest scholar Jeromy Miller.
  • The Virginian by Owen Wister, Wednesday, August 9, 2023, 6:30 PM with guest scholar Kurt Lively
  • The Log of a Cowboy by Andy Adams, Wednesday, September 13, 2023, 6:30 PM with guest scholar Andrew Vassar
  • Monte Walsh by Jack Schaefer, Wednesday, October 12, 2023, 6:30 PM with guest scholar Emily Dial-Driver
  • Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, Wednesday, November 8, 2023, 6:30 PM with guest scholar Brian Cowlishaw.

Discussions are held in the upstairs meeting room at Miami Public Library, 200 N Main Miami, OK 74354. Books can be checked out at the main circulation desk.

“This program is great for our community and would not be possible without this grant funding. I always enjoy seeing different community members come together to discuss books. Even if the book is not in someone’s favorite genre, we still have a great time gathering and discussing books.” Caitlyn Baker, Assistant Library Director, Miami Public Library.
