Summer Reading Program 2016
Wow! Can you believe that as little as twenty minutes a day spent reading can make a big difference in a child’s overall literacy skills? Summer is a time for most children to enjoy freedom from the classroom and school assignments. And yes, we all need a break at times. But summer is also a great time to practice reading and explore different genres. Just like you need to practice piano or soccer kicks, reading also takes practice. And studies have shown that if kids stop reading over the summer, over time they do fall behind.
MPL Children’s Department loves to challenge our area children to read as much as possible during summer break. This year we enrolled 240 kids in our Wellness Summer Reading Program. Incentives such as pizza, slushes, ice cream, swimming passes or a trip to the prize store served as extra encouragement to keep reading and turn in completed logs. Incentives were provided by our wonderful sponsors – Pizza Hut, Sonic, Jumpin’ Joey’s, Waylan’s Ku-Ku, and the City of Miami. On the final day of the reading program, July 29th, we tallied a total of 3650 books read by these children. Woo Hoo! Congratulations to all families who participated!
Thank you to the FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY for providing our “Family Day” performers. Boy, did we have fun! Great performances from Michael King, Kevin Wade, Stephen Smith, OSU Insect Adventure and the OKC Zoo. We are already looking forward to next year.
This project is funded through the Oklahoma Department of Libraries with funds from the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), a Federal source of Library funding provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
