Mark you calendars and join us next week for two NEA Big Read events! On January 16, 2025, at 10:00 AM, we will gather at Shawnee Skies (11245 S 705 Rd, Wyandotte, OK 74370) for an insightful discussion led by Chief Glenna Wallace of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. Our focus will be on the classic novel "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. This discussion promises to be unique and profound as Chief Wallace will offer tribal perspectives on the time period depicted in the book. Her insights will enrich our understanding of the historical context and the experiences of Native American communities during that era. Then, join us on January 18, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Wyandotte Nation Cultural Center (5 Council Fire Road, Wyandotte, OK 74370) for our third Creative Writing Workshop. This is your chance to explore and celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of our community. The workshop will be led by the amazing Lenzy Langford and the knowledgeable staff from the Wyandotte Nation Cultural Center. They will guide you through a creative journey, helping you to craft stories that honor and reflect the vibrant heritage of tribal citizens in Ottawa County. This workshop is more than just a writing session; it's a chance to connect with your community, reflect on your personal history, and contribute to a collective narrative that speaks to our shared experiences. Whether you're a seasoned writer or just starting out, your voice matters, and we can't wait to hear your stories! Special Perk: While supplies last! Participants of the creative writing workshop will receive a writer’s bag filled with a notebook, pencils, and pens to fuel your creative spirit! The personal stories about your life in Ottawa County will have the chance to be part of a unique compilation book, showcasing the diverse voices and histories of our community. Share your stories by dropping them off at the library or emailing them to librarystaff@miamiokla.net. If you haven’t gotten your FREE copy of "The Grapes of Wrath" yet, you can stop by Miami Public Library. We will also have some copies available at the event, while supplies last. “NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.”

👑 Three Kings Day Celebration!✨ Three Kings Day, or Epiphany, is celebrated on January 6th and commemorates the visit of the Magi to the infant Jesus. This day is filled with joy and gift-giving, particularly in Latin American cultures and Spain, where it is a time for family gatherings and festive meals. In many traditions, children leave their shoes out, hoping to receive gifts from the Three Wise Men, while families enjoy "Rosca de Reyes," a special sweet bread. The celebration represents the end of the Christmas season and the beginning of a new year filled with hope and blessings.
