⬛🟩🟥Happy Kwanzaa! 🟥🟩⬛ Kwanzaa is celebrated from December 26 to January 1 and emphasizes the importance of community, family, and cultural heritage. The holiday is rooted in African traditions and is centered around seven core principles known as the Nguzo Saba, which are Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith. Kwanzaa is symbolized by several colors and items. The three colors of Kwanzaa are black, red, and green: black represents the people, red symbolizes their struggles, and green stands for hope and the future. A key symbol is the kinara, a candle holder that holds seven candles—one for each of the principles. During the celebration, families light a candle each night, reflecting on each principle and its significance in their lives. Join us at the Miami Public Library to explore books and resources that delve deeper into these traditions. Let's come together to learn, share, and grow! #Kwanzaa #CulturalCelebration #MiamiPL #HolidaysAroundTheWorld #OttawaCountyOK #MoreThanYourGrandmasLibrary

חג אורים שמח 🕎 Happy Hanukkah! 🕎 Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a joyous Jewish holiday that commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the second century BCE. The holiday celebrates the miracle of the oil, where a small amount of oil, sufficient for one day, miraculously lasted for eight days. It is worth noting that while "Hanukkah" is the more commonly used spelling in English, "Chanukah" is preferred in traditional, observant circles, aligning more closely with the original Hebrew pronunciation. During Hanukkah, families gather to light the menorah, an eight-branched candelabrum, adding one candle each night until all eight are lit. This tradition symbolizes the miracle of the oil. Other customs associated with Hanukkah include spinning the dreidel, a four-sided top, and enjoying special foods such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled doughnuts). The holiday is a time for reflection, joy, and the celebration of faith and resilience. As we embrace the warmth and light of Hanukkah, we honor the spirit of hope and perseverance that this beautiful celebration represents.
