Genna – Ethiopian Christmas Celebration Genna, or Ethiopian Christmas, celebrated on January 7th, has deep historical roots that intertwine with the Ethiopian Orthodox Church's traditions. This celebration not only marks the birth of Jesus Christ but also reflects the rich cultural tapestry of Ethiopia, where Christianity has played a significant role since the 4th century. The day is steeped in customs that emphasize religious devotion and community spirit. Traditionally, on the eve of Genna, many Ethiopians attend a midnight church service, which is a time for prayer and reflection. The service is often followed by a festive meal that includes traditional dishes such as doro wat (spicy chicken stew) and injera (a sourdough flatbread). These meals are typically enjoyed in large gatherings, reinforcing the values of family and togetherness. 🍗 In addition to feasting, Genna is also associated with various traditional sports and activities that reflect Ethiopia's vibrant culture. One of the most notable is the game of "genna," a form of field hockey that is played in rural areas. This ancient game is played with sticks and a ball made of wood and is a festive way to engage the community, especially among the youth. 🏑 Other activities during Genna may include singing traditional songs, dancing, and storytelling, which serve to pass down cultural heritage and strengthen community bonds. These activities create a joyful atmosphere, embodying the spirit of celebration that characterizes this significant holiday. For those interested in delving deeper into the history and traditions of Genna, a selection of books and online resources is available. Mark you calendars and join us next week for two NEA Big Read events! On January 16, 2025, at 10:00 AM, we will gather at Shawnee Skies (11245 S 705 Rd, Wyandotte, OK 74370) for an insightful discussion led by Chief Glenna Wallace of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. Our focus will be on the classic novel "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. This discussion promises to be unique and profound as Chief Wallace will offer tribal perspectives on the time period depicted in the book. Her insights will enrich our understanding of the historical context and the experiences of Native American communities during that era. Then, join us on January 18, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Wyandotte Nation Cultural Center (5 Council Fire Road, Wyandotte, OK 74370) for our third Creative Writing Workshop.
